SEO Migration Services for Site Moves

Our SEO migration services are for businesses about to redesign, change platforms, merge sites or move to a new domain. Migrations are one of the easiest ways to lose search visibility, because URLs, content and internal links all change at once. We work as an SEO migration agency alongside your developers, planning each step so search engines can follow the move and pass existing signals to the new URLs.

Key takeaways

  • Every old URL is paired with its closest new equivalent, and blanket redirects to the homepage are avoided.
  • Redirects are single-hop and tested on staging alongside canonicals, sitemaps, robots rules and internal links.
  • Domain moves also use the change of address tool in Search Console, and old redirects stay in place for the long term.
01

Types of Migration We Plan

Each type carries different risks, so the plan starts by naming exactly what is changing.

  • Redesign

New templates and navigation on the same domain, where content and internal links often change more than people expect.

  • Platform Change

Moving between systems such as WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or a custom build, where URL patterns usually change.

  • Domain Move

Changing to a new domain or merging several domains into one, which needs redirects plus Google's Change of Address tool.

  • Protocol and Structure Changes

HTTP to HTTPS, subdomain to subfolder, or reorganizing URL paths and categories.

  • Content Consolidation

Merging or pruning pages, where each removed URL needs a deliberate decision about where it goes.

02

Before Launch: Benchmark and URL Map

Every SEO migration starts with a record of what you have. We crawl the current site, export pages with impressions and clicks from Search Console, pull top landing pages from analytics and list pages with external links. This benchmark shows which URLs matter most and gives us something to compare against after launch.

We then build a URL map that pairs every old URL with its closest new equivalent. Pages with no equivalent get a decision: redirect to the nearest relevant page, or return a 404 or 410 if nothing fits. Redirecting everything to the homepage is not a plan, and Google may treat those redirects as soft 404s.

03

Redirects, Staging and Launch Checks

Redirects are set up as single-hop 301s from each old URL to its final new address, with no chains. On staging we test the full redirect list along with titles, Meta descriptions, canonicals, structured data, internal links, robots.txt and XML sitemaps, and confirm staging is blocked from search engines while the live site will not be. Our technical SEO service covers the same checks outside a migration.

On launch day we recrawl the live site, retest redirects, submit the new sitemap and, for domain moves, file the change of address in Search Console. We advise keeping the old domain and its redirects in place for the long term, since removing them too soon can undo the move.

04

After Launch: Monitoring and Fixes

Search engines take time to process a migration, and some movement in the weeks after launch is normal. We watch Search Console indexing reports and crawl errors, compare rankings and traffic for key pages against the benchmark, and check server logs where available. When a page drops or a URL errors, we trace the cause and send a fix.

The length of the monitoring period is part of the fixed quote and agreed in writing before work starts. If you want ongoing SEO once the new site settles, that can move to a monthly plan.

05

Working With Your Developers and Designers

Most migrations are built by someone else: an in-house developer, a web agency or a platform vendor. We fit around them, sharing the URL map in a format they can import, reviewing templates before build and joining launch-day checks.

If you need the site built too, our website redesign service handles the build with SEO planned in from the start, and our Shopify development service covers moves to Shopify.

06

Pricing and What You Provide

SEO migration is a one-off project with a fixed quote in writing, based on site size, the type of migration and how long monitoring runs. You provide access to Search Console, analytics, the current CMS and staging, plus the launch date your developers set.

We cannot promise rankings or traffic stay level through a migration. What we can do is remove the avoidable causes of loss and catch problems early. If you are unsure where your site stands before the move, an SEO audit is a sensible first step, and our SEO services page covers ongoing work.

FAQ

SEO Migration Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Ask us anything else on the free audit call.

Before design and development start. URL structure, templates and content decisions are much cheaper to get right early than to fix after launch.

Some short-term movement is common even when everything is done well. Careful mapping, clean redirects and quick fixes after launch reduce the risk of lasting losses, but we cannot promise traffic stays flat.

As long as you can. Google advises keeping them for at least a year, and we recommend keeping them indefinitely where your hosting allows.

Not always. If the current URLs are clean and descriptive, keeping them on the new platform removes much of the risk. We only change URLs where there is a clear reason.

Often, yes. We compare the old site, using crawls, archives and analytics, with the new one, find missing redirects and lost content, and fix them. The sooner this happens, the easier it usually is.
