Free Backlinks in 2026: What Works and What Google Ignores

SEO Specialist · October 20, 2026

Key Takeaways #

Backlinks still matter for Google rankings, but Google now calls links "a factor", not an important one, and its spam systems neutralize links built to manipulate rankings.

For AI Overviews, branded web mentions correlate with visibility three times more strongly than backlink counts, so a mention without a link is no longer a failure.

The free backlinks that work are earned references: unlinked mentions, expert quotes, original data, free tools, and broken link fixes.

Directory blasts, comment links, reciprocal exchanges, footer links, and automated tools are named as link spam in Google's own policy.

Free is a budget line, not a price of zero. Expect single-digit outreach conversion and plan for the two-thirds of links that decay.

Free backlinks are still worth building in 2026, but only a short list of them, and for different reasons than most guides give. Google has spent two years downgrading the weight of raw link counts, and the AI answers that now sit above the results reward brand mentions more than link totals. The free tactics that survive are the ones that produce a real reference from a real site, not a listing, a comment, or a swapped link.

The pressure comes from both directions. Google has shipped four spam updates in 2026 alone, in March, June, August, and September, according to its own Search Status Dashboard. At the same time, Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found that branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while raw backlink counts manage only 0.218. Cheap links that used to be harmless filler are now ignored, or even a liability, and the mention you never asked for is worth more than it used to be.

This guide sorts free link building strategies into what still earns a link that counts, what Google has said it discounts, and what each tactic costs in hours.

Yes, but with a smaller role than before. Google's documentation says it uses links as a signal for relevance and for discovering new pages. In March 2024, as Search Engine Journal reported, Google removed the word "important" from the sentence in its spam policy describing links as a ranking factor, and a month later Google's Gary Illyes told a conference audience that Google needs very few links to rank pages. Both point the same way: a link is still counted, but it is no longer the lever.

Horizontal timeline from September 2019 to 2026 marking nofollow becoming a hint, the December 2022 link spam update, the March 2024 wording change, Gary Illyes' April 2024 remark, the HARO shutdown and relaunch, and four spam updates in 2026.
How Google's public position on links shifted between 2019 and 2026, from nofollow becoming a hint to four spam updates in a single year.

The correlation data has not flipped. Backlinko's analysis of 11.8 million results, last updated in April 2025, still shows the first result averaging 3.8 times more backlinks than positions two to ten. What changed is what sits next to that correlation. In Ahrefs' brand visibility study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, branded anchors at 0.527, Domain Rating at 0.326, referring domains at 0.295, and backlink count at 0.218. Ahrefs' January 2026 follow-up found that being mentioned on pages with strong link profiles correlated at 0.70.

So the short answer to "are backlinks still important for SEO" is that the link is one output of a bigger input: being referenced by sites people already trust. That is also why free backlinks have not died.

Most "free backlinks" lists are a tour of the practices Google's spam policies name as link spam: buying or selling links for ranking, excessive exchanges or partner pages that exist only to cross-link, optimized anchor text in guest posts and press releases distributed on other sites, automated link programs, forum comments with optimized links, links in footers or templates across many sites, and links required by a terms of service. The page was last updated on 28 August 2026, so none of this is stale.

Seven practices Google's spam policy names as link spam, each of which was once sold as a free backlink tactic.

Enforcement is not theoretical. Google's December 2022 link spam update said its SpamBrain system can detect both sites buying links and sites used to pass outgoing links, and that any credit from those links is lost. Since then, Google has run spam updates in December 2024, August 2025, and four times in 2026. A neutralized link rarely hurts you. It simply stops counting, so the afternoon spent earning it was wasted.

The tactics that get you dropped from any backlink-building list are directory blasts, blog comment and forum signature links, Web 2.0 profile pages, reciprocal deals, article sites that accept anything, and tools that insert your link into other sites' templates. Local directories are the one exception, and only as citations: consistent business details on the main local listings still feed local search, as covered in our guide to businesses that do not show on Google, but the value is the citation, not the link.

Every tactic below produces a reference from a page that chose to cite you, which is the test for white hat link building in 2026.

Six numbered tiles describing free backlink tactics that still work: reclaiming unlinked mentions, answering expert source requests, publishing original data, building a free tool, fixing broken links and turning relationships into references.
Six free backlink tactics that still earn links that count, ranked by the kind of reference each one produces.
  • Reclaim unlinked brand mentions. Search for your brand, product, and founder names across news sites, blogs, and podcasts, then ask the author for a link where they already mentioned you. The ask is small, the hit rate is the highest of any outreach, and the mention itself is the asset Ahrefs found correlating most strongly with AI visibility. Tracking mentions is routine work inside an online reputation management program.

  • Answer expert source requests. HARO, the original free source platform, was shut down by Cision on 9 December 2024 and relaunched under new ownership on 16 April 2025, according to Featured's announcement, and it remains free for sources in 2026 with daily query emails. Reply only where you have a specific credential and a specific number, and expect journalists to quote you without a link some of the time. That is still a mention on a news site.

  • Publish original data. Statistics pages, benchmarks, and surveys are the one format other writers must cite. Ahrefs' own case study on a stats page sent 515 emails, saw a 17.55% reply rate and a 5.71% conversion rate, and earned 36 links from 32 sites, with five more linking unprompted. Even a small dataset from your own clients beats a rewritten listicle, which is why it belongs at the top of a content writing plan.

  • Build a free tool or calculator. A converter, a checker, or a template earns links for years because people link to things they use. It has to work on mobile and load fast, which makes it a web design task as much as a marketing one.

  • Fix broken links and refresh resource pages. Find dead pages in your niche, build a better replacement, and tell the sites still linking to the dead one. Ahrefs' link rot study found 66.5% of links pointing to two million sites had rotted since 2013, so the supply is not running out.

  • Turn relationships into references. Suppliers, clients, software you use, associations, events you speak at, and podcasts you join all publish pages where a link to you is natural. These links are slow and unscalable, which is why they hold value. Sharing those appearances on social media adds mentions that AI systems count alongside the link.

Free describes the invoice, not the effort. A June 2025 survey of 518 SEO professionals, run by a link building vendor and reported by Search Engine Land, put the average acceptable price for one quality link at $508.95 and found 48.6% rating digital PR as the most effective tactic. The free route replaces that fee with hours: research, writing the asset, outreach, follow-ups, and monitoring. At Ahrefs' 5.71% outreach conversion, 100 well-targeted emails produce five or six links, which then decay at the rate Figure 5 shows.

Donut chart showing 66.5 percent of links rotted between 2013 and 2022, with horizontal bars breaking lost links down by cause, led by linking pages dropping from the index at 47.7 percent and links removed at 34.2 percent.
Where lost links go: 66.5% of links pointing to 2,062,173 sampled websites rotted between 2013 and 2022, most often because the linking page disappeared or the link was edited out.

That arithmetic still favors earned links for most small and mid-sized sites, because the same hours produce the mentions, data, and tools that feed AI search visibility. It stops favoring them when the hours go into tactics on Google's spam list, where the expected value is zero.

The useful shift in 2026 is that the free backlinks worth having are also the ones that improve how AI systems describe you. A mention on a trusted page helps even if the link never arrives, so the same six tactics serve both Google results and the answer engines above them, the overlap generative engine optimization is built around. Begin with a mention audit, pick one data asset to publish this quarter, and leave the spam list alone. If you would rather have your link profile and mention gaps mapped first, a short SEO audit will show where the next hour is best spent.

Frequently Asked Questions #

Yes, if they come from pages that chose to reference you: unlinked mentions, expert quotes, original data, free tools, and broken link replacements. Free links from directories, comments, exchanges, and automated tools are listed as link spam in Google's policy and are discounted rather than counted.

Backlinks remain a Google ranking signal, but Google removed the word "important" from its own description of links in March 2024 and says it needs very few links to rank pages. Links still correlate with rankings, and brand mentions now correlate more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlink counts do.

Start by claiming unlinked mentions of your brand, then answer expert source requests, publish an original dataset or statistics page, build a free tool, and pitch replacements for broken links in your niche. Each tactic earns an editorial reference rather than a placement you control.

Google's spam policy names buying or selling links, excessive exchanges, optimized anchors in distributed guest posts and press releases, automated link programs, forum and comment links, footer and template links across many sites, and links required by terms of service. Its spam systems neutralize these, so they lose credit.

Is HARO still free in 2026? #

Yes. HARO was shut down by Cision on 9 December 2024, acquired by Featured in April 2025, and relaunched at helpareporter.com, where it remains free for sources and sends daily query emails. Treat it as a mention source first and a link source second.

White hat link building earns links by giving other sites a reason to cite you, such as data, tools, expert comment, or a better resource, and never pays for, trades, or automates links for ranking purposes. It is the only kind of link building that is compatible with Google's spam policies.

Original data, digital PR style outreach, unlinked mention reclamation, and useful free tools produce the most durable links. A June 2025 survey of 518 SEO professionals found 48.6% rating digital PR as the most effective tactic, while guest posting was chosen by 16%.

For AI search, yes. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlink counts. For classic Google rankings, Google has not confirmed mentions as a signal, so a linked mention is still the better outcome.

There is no fixed number. Google says it needs very few links to rank pages, and the right count depends on the competition for the query. Backlinko's analysis of 11.8 million results found the first result averaged 3.8 times more backlinks than positions two to ten, showing a correlation, not a target.

Many disappear outright. Ahrefs found that 66.5% of links pointing to a sample of 2,062,173 websites had rotted since January 2013, most often because the linking page dropped out of the index or the link was edited out. Monitor your links and replace what you lose.
