Website Personalization Services

Website personalization means showing different content to different groups of visitors, based on what you know about them. A returning customer, a first-time visitor from a Google ad and a buyer from a target account in your CRM all want different things. We set up the segments, build the content and test whether it actually helps.

Key takeaways

  • Segments are chosen when they are large enough to matter and behave differently enough to need their own message.
  • A holdout group keeps seeing the default page, and any segment that does not beat it gets switched off.
  • Segments based on sensitive data such as health conditions are avoided, and new data use should pass your legal review.
01

What Personalization Looks Like in Practice

Most useful personalization is simple. A visitor who clicked an ad for running shoes lands on a page that leads with running shoes. A returning customer sees a reorder link instead of a first-order discount. A visitor from Canada sees shipping details that apply to them.

These changes follow rules you can explain. They are easier to build, test and maintain than complex models that change every element on the page.

Product recommendations based on browsing and purchase history are another form. They suit stores with large catalogs and enough data to make the suggestions useful.

Visitor Groups We Personalize For

We pick segments that are large enough to matter and different enough to need their own message.

  • Traffic Source and Campaign

Headlines and offers that match the ad, email or social post a visitor clicked, using UTM tags or referrer data.

  • New Versus Returning Visitors

Introductions and first-order offers for new visitors, and shortcuts, reorders or loyalty content for returning ones.

  • Location

Shipping times, store locations, currency or regional proof points based on a visitor's approximate location.

  • Customer Status

Content for logged-in customers based on past purchases, plan level or subscription status.

  • B2B Account and Industry

Industry-specific case studies and messaging for visitors from target accounts or known companies.

How We Build and Measure Dynamic Content Personalization

Step 1: We look at your analytics to find segments that behave differently, such as paid visitors who bounce far more than organic ones. Step 2: We write a hypothesis for each segment and the content it needs.

Step 3: We build the experience in a personalization tool. Common options include Optimizely, VWO, Adobe Target and Dynamic Yield, and Mutiny for B2B sites. Some platforms, such as HubSpot with its smart content, have built-in options. Dynamic content personalization can also run server-side for speed.

Step 4: We keep a holdout group that sees the default page. Without one, you cannot tell whether personalization helped or whether that segment would have converted anyway. Segments that do not beat the holdout get switched off.

04

Privacy and Consent Come First

Personalization uses visitor data, so it has to follow privacy law and your own policy. US state privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, give people rights over how their data is used. Your consent banner and privacy policy need to cover what you do.

We avoid segments based on sensitive data, such as health conditions, and we do not personalize in ways that would feel invasive to a visitor. If a change would surprise someone, we leave it out. Your legal team should review any new data use before launch.

05

Pricing for Personalization Programs

A personalization strategy and setup project gets a fixed quote in writing. Ongoing work, including new segments, content and testing, starts at $1,000 a month. Personalization tool licenses are billed by the vendor and vary widely.

Cost depends on the number of segments, how many pages change, whether we need CRM or ecommerce data connections and who writes the content. Many sites start with two or three segments and add more once they see results.

Personalization works best on top of a solid site. If key pages have basic problems, a CRO audit should come first. See all of our conversion rate optimization services.

FAQ

Website Personalization Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Ask us anything else on the free audit call.

Common examples include matching a landing page headline to the ad a visitor clicked, showing returning customers a reorder button and changing case studies by industry for B2B visitors. Stores often add product recommendations based on browsing history.

Each segment needs enough visitors to measure against a holdout group. If your traffic is modest, start with one or two large segments, such as paid versus organic visitors. Small segments can be personalized, but results will take longer to read.

No. An A/B test shows different versions to random visitors to find one winner for everyone. Personalization shows different versions to defined groups. We use testing to check that each personalized experience beats the default.

Client-side tools can add load time and a flicker as content swaps. We set them up to limit that, and use server-side or edge delivery where your platform supports it.

Some simple rules, such as matching headlines to UTM tags, can be built into your site or CMS. A dedicated tool makes it easier to manage many segments and measure results.
