Pay Per Lead Marketing Explained

If you are looking for a pay per lead marketing agency, this page explains how per-lead pricing works and how our plans differ. We do not charge per lead. Every lead comes from campaigns we run only for your business, so it is exclusive to you. We do not sell leads from a shared pool, and we do not resell your leads to anyone else.

Key takeaways

  • A billable lead needs real contact details, the right area and fit, a genuine request and no duplicate entry.
  • Ask any per-lead seller whether leads are exclusive, where they come from and whether the consent language names your business.
  • Pure per-lead deals carry risk on both sides, since a seller paid only on volume may chase cheap, weak leads.
01

How Pay per Lead Pricing Works

With pay per lead, you pay an agreed fee for each lead that meets a written definition. You are not paying for hours or for a flat monthly retainer. The agency takes on more of the risk, so it will want clear rules on what counts.

Pay per lead generation companies come in two types. Lead sellers run their own sites and comparison pages, then sell each inquiry to one or more buyers. Some agencies run campaigns under your brand and bill per lead. The first type is often faster to start. The second gives you exclusive leads, your own data and ads that build your name.

Google's Local Services Ads also charge per lead rather than per click. We can run them alongside your other campaigns as part of a monthly plan.

02

What Makes a Lead Billable

Any per-lead deal should rest on a written definition. A typical one looks like this.

  • Real Contact Details

A working phone number or email that reaches the person who asked.

  • Right Place and Fit

Inside your service area or target market, for a service you actually sell.

  • A Genuine Request

Not a job seeker, a vendor pitch, a test entry or spam.

  • Not a Duplicate

The same person within an agreed window counts once.

  • Consent on Record

For calls and texts, the form names your business and records consent as the TCPA requires.

  • Dispute Window

You can flag a lead within an agreed number of days, with a reason, and the seller reviews it.

03

Why We Do Not Quote a Cost per Lead

We will not quote a cost per lead before running your campaigns. Lead costs depend on your market, your offer, your competitors and how fast your team follows up. Any agency that quotes a fixed price on day one is guessing or selling shared leads.

So we do not sell leads by the piece. Our plans are a flat monthly fee that runs month to month and ends on 7 days' written notice, and your reporting shows what each lead cost. Other firms offer pure per-lead pricing, or a hybrid of a lower retainer plus a per-lead fee.

Pure per-lead deals have risks on both sides. An agency paid only on volume may chase cheap, weak leads. A client paying per lead may dispute good ones. A tight lead definition and shared CRM data keep both sides honest.

04

Questions to Ask Pay per Lead Companies

Whether you hire a pay per lead company or an agency like us, ask these before you sign.

Are the leads exclusive, or sold to several buyers? Where do they come from, and can you see the ads and landing pages? Does the consent language name your business? Are any leads from incentivized traffic, such as sweepstakes or co-registration forms? What is the return policy? Whose ad account do the campaigns run in, and which pages and data do you keep if you leave?

Good pay per lead services answer each one in writing. Vague answers to the first two questions usually mean shared or resold leads.

05

Fees, Ad Spend and What Drives Your Cost

Our plans start at $1,000 a month and run month to month. We bill ad spend on its own line, apart from the plan fee, so you can see what each lead costs. With per-lead pricing, ad spend is often built into the fee instead.

Your cost per lead depends on competition in your area, how narrow the lead definition is and how much qualifying we do before handoff. A lead qualified before handoff costs more than a raw form fill, and it is usually worth more too.

We will not promise a set number of leads each month. Per-lead pricing works best with landing pages built for conversion, so see our sales funnel service. Local businesses should also read about our local lead generation. For all options, see our lead generation services.

Not always. Per-lead fees include the agency's risk, so each lead can cost more than it would on a retainer. The benefit is that your spend tracks results. Compare the cost per closed deal, not just the cost per lead.

No. We run campaigns under your brand, and each lead goes only to you. You also keep the contact data and the campaign history.

With per-lead pricing, you flag it within the dispute window and give a reason, such as a wrong number or an out-of-area address. On our monthly plans, we check it against the lead definition and use it to tighten targeting.

It suits businesses where a lead is easy to define, such as home services, legal intake or local healthcare. It is harder for long B2B sales, where a first contact may take months to become a real opportunity. In those cases, a monthly plan usually fits better.

No. Our plans run month to month and end on 7 days' written notice. If you leave, your leads, your data and your landing pages stay with you.
