Ecommerce Affiliate Program Management

We build and manage an ecommerce affiliate program for online stores that want partners to sell for them on commission. Affiliates can bring new customers at a cost you set in advance. They can also quietly take credit for sales you would have made anyway. Our job is to grow the first kind and limit the second.

Key takeaways

  • Commission rates are set by category or product group, often higher for new customers than for returning ones.
  • A lock period means orders are approved only after the return window closes, and returned orders are reversed.
  • Program terms ban brand bidding and unapproved coupon use, and coupon sites and paid search are monitored for violations.
01

Who Sells for an Online Store

Ecommerce affiliate marketing draws on several kinds of partners. Each brings different customers and different risks.

  • Content and Review Sites

Buying guides, reviews and best-of lists that reach shoppers while they compare products.

  • Publisher Commerce Teams

Shopping sections and gift guides at larger media sites, often planned months ahead.

  • Newsletters and Niche Blogs

Independent writers with loyal audiences who share links and codes in emails and posts.

  • Cashback and Loyalty Sites

Sites that pay members a share of the commission. They can drive volume, but often reach existing shoppers.

  • Coupon and Deal Sites

High volume and low cost per click, but frequently the last click before a sale that was already happening.

02

Setting Commissions by Product Margin

A flat rate across your catalog rarely makes sense. A high-margin accessory can support a larger commission than a low-margin bestseller. We set rates by category or product group, based on your margins and what each partner type is worth.

We usually suggest paying more for new customers than for returning ones, and less for coupon and cashback partners than for content partners. Bonuses for hitting sales tiers can keep top partners focused on you.

Commissions should follow your returns policy. We set a lock period so orders are only approved after your return window closes, and returned or canceled orders are reversed. Gift cards and some promotions are usually excluded.

03

Platforms: Affiliate Networks and Shopify Apps

Networks such as Impact.com, CJ, Awin, Rakuten Advertising and Partnerize give you access to established publishers and handle tracking and payouts. They charge platform or network fees on top of commissions.

Smaller stores often start with a Shopify app such as Shopify Collabs, UpPromote, Refersion or GoAffPro. These cost less and are simpler, but you recruit partners yourself. Some brands use an app first and add a network later.

Whichever you use, tracking has to be reliable. We test links, coupon code attribution and server-side tracking before launch. We also make sure your checkout setup passes order data correctly. For broader store growth, see our Shopify marketing services.

04

Protecting Your Margin

Three problems drain most ecommerce programs. Coupon leakage happens when a code meant for one partner ends up on coupon sites. Brand bidding happens when affiliates buy ads on your brand name and take credit for shoppers who were already looking for you. Fraud covers fake orders, cookie stuffing and browser extensions that drop links at checkout.

We write program terms that ban brand bidding and unapproved coupon use. We give partners unique codes and monitor coupon sites and paid search for violations. We also review unusual order patterns before approving payouts. Partners who break the rules get warned, then removed.

05

How We Run Your Program

Step 1: We review your margins, average order value, returns and current partners. Step 2: We choose the platform, set commission tiers and write terms. Step 3: We recruit and onboard partners, with product feeds, images, codes and a seasonal offer calendar. Step 4: We approve orders, manage payouts, remove bad actors and report monthly.

Season matters in ecommerce. We pitch Black Friday, Cyber Monday and holiday gift guide placements well before Q4, since publishers plan them early. New partners come through our affiliate recruitment process.

06

Pricing for an Ecommerce Affiliate Program

Program setup gets a fixed quote in writing, and ongoing management starts at $1,000 a month. Cost depends on the number of partners, how much recruiting we do and the platform you use.

Commissions and network fees are paid separately. We will not promise a revenue figure, since products, prices and season all shape results. You keep ownership of the program, the partner list and the data. This service is part of our affiliate marketing agency work.

FAQ

Ecommerce Affiliate Programs Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Ask us anything else on the free audit call.

It depends on your margins, average order value and the partner type. Content partners who bring new customers can earn more than coupon sites. We set rates by category after reviewing your numbers and competing programs.

Sometimes, with limits. Coupon sites can help close sales, but they often reach shoppers who would have bought anyway. Many brands pay them lower rates or only accept specific partners.

A Shopify app is often enough to start, especially if you will recruit partners and customers yourself. A network makes sense when you want access to large publishers and help with payouts. We can start on one and move later.

We set a lock period that matches your return window. Orders that are returned or canceled during that time are reversed, so you do not pay commission on them.

Affiliate programs pay commission on sales from any partner type, including sites and newsletters. Influencer programs often add flat fees or free product. Many stores run creators inside their affiliate program with commission plus occasional fees. We do not source creators, but any you bring in can be tracked like other partners.
