SaaS and B2B Affiliate Program Design

We build and run a SaaS affiliate program for software and B2B companies that want partners to bring in paying customers. Software is sold differently from retail goods. Revenue is recurring, buyers often start with a trial and some deals pass through a sales team. Your program has to reward partners fairly across all of that.

Key takeaways

  • Attribution windows are set to match your trial length and sales cycle, so a late first payment is still credited.
  • Commissions start after the first payment clears, and refunds or chargebacks are clawed back.
  • Sales-assisted deals use lead registration and source fields in your CRM, so the referrer is credited when the deal closes.
01

How SaaS Affiliate Marketing Differs From Retail

In retail, a sale happens and the commission is done. In software, a customer may trial for weeks, upgrade later and pay for years, or churn after a month. Commissions, tracking and payout timing all need to reflect that.

The partners differ too. Software affiliates include comparison and review sites, niche bloggers and YouTubers, newsletter writers, course creators, communities and consultants who recommend tools to clients. Agencies that set up your product for their clients can be some of your best partners.

SaaS affiliate marketing works best when partners understand the product. We give them demo access, use-case guides and clear messaging, not just a banner and a link.

02

Commission Models for Software

We choose a model based on your pricing, sales motion and margins.

  • Recurring Commission

A share of each payment for a set number of months or for the customer's lifetime. Common for self-serve subscriptions.

  • One-Time Bounty

A fixed amount per new paying customer. Simple to explain and easy to budget.

  • Per Qualified Lead or Demo

A set fee when a referred company meets your criteria and books a demo. Suits sales-led products.

  • Share of First-Year Contract

A percentage of the first year's contract value for larger B2B deals closed by your team.

  • Tiers and Bonuses

Higher rates for partners who bring more customers, to keep top partners focused on you.

03

Tracking Trials, Upgrades and Sales-Assisted Deals

Tracking has to connect the first click to the payment, which may come weeks later. We set attribution windows that match your trial length and sales cycle.

For self-serve products, we connect your affiliate platform to billing. Tools such as Rewardful, FirstPromoter and Tolt connect directly with Stripe. PartnerStack and Impact.com suit larger programs with many partner types. Commissions start after the first payment clears, and refunds or chargebacks are clawed back.

For sales-assisted deals, we add partner source fields to your CRM, such as HubSpot or Salesforce. Partners can register a lead, so the deal is credited to them when your team closes it.

04

A B2B Affiliate Program for Sales-Led Companies

If your product needs a demo and a contract, a classic affiliate link is not enough. A B2B affiliate program usually pays for qualified introductions, with a clear definition of qualified agreed with your sales team.

B2B affiliate marketing often overlaps with referral and reseller partnerships. Consultants may start as affiliates and later want to resell or implement your product. We design tiers so partners can move up as they bring more business. For reseller programs, see our channel marketing service. For direct growth programs, see our SaaS marketing service.

05

Partner Rules and Disclosure

Many software affiliates publish reviews and best-of lists. Under the FTC's Endorsement Guides, a partner who earns a commission must disclose that connection clearly, close to the recommendation. Our terms require it, and we check partner pages.

The FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials also bans buying fake reviews and offering rewards on the condition that a review is positive. We do not run programs that reward reviews by rating. Terms also ban bidding on your brand name, spam and misleading claims about your product.

06

How We Run Your Program, and What It Costs

Step 1: We review your pricing, trial data, churn and sales process. Step 2: We choose the platform and commission model, then write terms. Step 3: We recruit partners, build an onboarding kit and launch. Step 4: We approve payouts, support partners and report monthly on trials, paying customers, revenue and churn by partner.

Setup gets a fixed quote in writing, and ongoing management starts at $1,000 a month. Commissions and platform fees are separate. We will not promise a number of customers, since product fit and pricing drive most of the result. This is part of our affiliate marketing agency services.

FAQ

SaaS Affiliate Programs Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Ask us anything else on the free audit call.

It depends on your pricing, margins and customer lifetime. Self-serve products often use a recurring share for a set period, while sales-led products pay per qualified lead or a share of the first contract. We model options against your numbers.

Recurring commissions attract partners who care about long-term customers, but they cost more over time. One-time bounties are simpler and easier to budget. Some programs offer both and let partners choose.

Stripe-based self-serve products often start with a tool like Rewardful or FirstPromoter. Companies with many partner types and sales-led deals often choose PartnerStack or Impact.com. We recommend based on your billing, CRM and growth plans.

We hold commissions until the first payment clears and claw back refunds and chargebacks. Recurring commissions stop when a customer cancels. These rules are written into the terms partners accept.

They can make introductions, which your sales team then works. For partners who want to resell or implement your product, a channel or reseller program is usually a better fit than a standard affiliate link.
