Retail Marketing Automation

We build retail marketing automation for retailers that sell in stores, online or both. The goal is to send each shopper a relevant next message based on what they browsed, bought or left behind. For multichannel retailers, that means joining point-of-sale data with your ecommerce platform. A shopper who bought a jacket in store should not get a cart reminder for the same jacket that night.

Key takeaways

  • Online reminders stop once a shopper buys the same item in store.
  • Changes to core flows are frozen during the busiest stretch, and frequency caps limit how often a shopper hears from you.
  • Quiet hours are set by each shopper's time zone, and discounts follow rules you approve.
01

Core Flows Every Retailer Should Run

These flows run all year and react to what each shopper does. We build them first, then add campaigns on top.

  • Welcome Series

A short introduction to your store, best sellers and loyalty program for new subscribers.

  • Browse and Cart Abandonment

Reminders based on viewed products and abandoned carts, with suppression once they buy anywhere.

  • Post-Purchase

Care tips, related products and review requests timed to delivery or pickup.

  • Back-in-Stock and Price Drop

Alerts when a saved or viewed item returns or goes on sale.

  • Replenishment

Reminders for consumable products based on typical reorder timing.

  • Win-Back

Outreach to lapsed customers, with offers set by rules you approve.

02

Bringing in-Store Data Into the Picture

In marketing automation, retail data is often split across systems. Store sales sit in the point-of-sale system, online orders in the ecommerce platform and loyalty points somewhere else. Messages built on only one source miss half the story.

We connect POS systems such as Shopify POS, Square or Lightspeed to your marketing platform. Shoppers can opt in at checkout by email or phone, or through digital receipts. Loyalty IDs help match in-store and online profiles.

With joined data, you can invite customers to events at their nearest store and stop online reminders after an in-store purchase. You can also send pickup notices for buy-online, pick-up-in-store orders. Those pickup notices are transactional, so we keep them separate from promotions.

03

Planning Around Peak Season

Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the holiday weeks bring your highest volume and your highest risk. A broken flow during those weeks can cost far more than the same bug in March.

We build and test peak campaigns weeks ahead, then freeze changes to core flows during the busiest stretch. We set frequency caps, so a shopper on several lists does not get five emails in a day. Messages check inventory before promoting a product, and shipping cutoff dates are built into the schedule.

After the holidays, return-period messages and win-back flows take over. Back-to-school and other seasonal peaks follow the same plan on a smaller scale.

04

SMS Consent, Privacy and AI-Written Copy

Marketing texts need prior express written consent under the TCPA, and every message needs a way to opt out. Some states, such as Florida and Oklahoma, also limit the hours when marketing texts can be sent. We set quiet hours by the shopper's time zone.

Every promotional email follows CAN-SPAM, with your address and a working unsubscribe. Several state privacy laws, including California's, give shoppers rights to opt out of certain data uses. Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates open rates, so we judge flows by clicks, orders and revenue.

AI helps with product copy variations, subject line drafts and predicted next order dates inside platforms such as Klaviyo. A person reviews every new template before it goes live. AI does not set discounts on its own. Discounts follow rules you approve.

05

Platforms, Pricing and Reporting

We can build in Klaviyo, with SMS through Klaviyo or tools such as Attentive and Postscript. Our Klaviyo and SMS marketing services handle content and campaigns. For POS and store data connections, our workflow automation service builds the syncs.

Audits and builds get a fixed quote in writing, and ongoing management starts at $1,000 a month. Platform fees are billed by each vendor.

We will not promise a set revenue figure from automation. Platform attribution can overstate results, so we use holdout groups where volume allows to show what each flow adds. For the full channel plan, see our retail marketing services and all our AI automation services.

Yes, if you collect contact details at checkout with consent. Digital receipts and loyalty programs are the usual ways. In-store purchases can then trigger the same post-purchase and win-back flows.

Klaviyo is a common choice for retailers on Shopify and similar platforms. Larger retailers may need Salesforce Marketing Cloud or Braze. We choose based on your ecommerce platform, POS and data volume.

Most retailers start with welcome, cart and browse abandonment and post-purchase. Those cover the moments when shoppers are most engaged. We add the rest once those are measured.

They can, which is why we set frequency caps and suppression rules. Shoppers should get fewer, more relevant messages rather than every campaign. We watch unsubscribe and complaint rates closely.

Yes. Each location can have its own events, inventory and messages, while customer profiles stay unified across the chain.
