Brand Naming Agency for Companies & Products

As a brand naming agency, we help you find a company or product name that fits your strategy, is easy to say and is screened before it goes to trademark review. We create a long list, narrow it with you and screen the finalists. Your trademark attorney then makes the legal call.

Key takeaways

  • Goals are written into a naming brief first, so every candidate is judged against the same standard.
  • Finalists get knockout searches of the USPTO database, domain and handle checks and state business name lookups.
  • Shortlisted names are presented in context and talked through out loud, because names are heard as often as read.
01

What Makes a Name Usable

A good name is easy to say and easy to spell after hearing it once. It stands apart from competitors and has a workable domain and social handles. It carries no bad meanings in the languages your customers speak. And it can be protected.

Names fall into a few types. Descriptive names say what you do, such as a city name plus a trade. Suggestive names hint at a benefit. Invented names are new words. Founder names use a person's name.

Descriptive names are easy to understand but hard to protect. The USPTO often refuses to register marks that only describe the product. Suggestive and invented names are easier to protect but need more marketing to explain.

What Our Brand Naming Service Includes

Each project follows the same core steps, scaled to the size of the decision.

  • Naming Brief

Your strategy, audience, tone, words to avoid and the markets where the name must work.

  • Name Development

A long list of candidates across name types, grouped by theme so patterns are easy to see.

  • Preliminary Screening

Knockout searches of the USPTO database, domain and social handle checks, and state business name lookups.

  • Language Check

A check of meanings and pronunciation in the languages and markets you name.

  • Shortlist Presentation

Finalists shown in context, such as a storefront, an email signature and a product label, with the reasoning for each.

03

From Brief to Shortlist

Step 1: We agree on the brief. Most naming fights happen because people judge names against different goals, so we write the goals down first.

Step 2: We generate names. We write far more candidates than we will show you, then cut weak and risky ones ourselves.

Step 3: We screen the strongest candidates for obvious conflicts, domains and handles. Step 4: We present a shortlist and talk through each name out loud, because names are heard as often as they are read.

Step 5: You pick favorites for your attorney to search. If those fail clearance, we return to the long list or run another round.

04

Trademarks, Domains and the Limits of Screening

We are not a law firm. Our screening finds obvious conflicts, but it does not replace a full clearance search by a trademark attorney.

Trademarks are registered by class of goods and services, and the USPTO uses 45 classes. A name used by a company in a different class may be fine, or it may not. That judgment belongs to your attorney.

Exact-match .com domains are often taken. We suggest workable options, such as adding a word or using another ending, and flag when a domain is listed for sale at a premium. Buying a domain from its owner is your decision. We will not promise that any name will be available or registrable.

05

Brand Naming Company or Naming and Branding Agency

A brand naming consultant working alone can suit a single product name with a small team. A brand naming company that also designs, often called a naming and branding agency, can take the chosen name straight into a logo and identity. That avoids a handoff gap between the people who named it and the people who draw it.

Company naming, product names and a name plus logo design each get a fixed quote in writing. Cost depends on the number of markets, languages and rounds.

For smaller budgets, our business naming services skip the deep research and focus on a tight shortlist. Startups often pair naming with our startup branding package. Naming is often the first step in a larger branding agency project.

FAQ

Brand Naming Questions, Answered

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Ask us anything else on the free audit call.

Generators are useful for warming up, but they cannot judge fit, meaning or legal risk. Many generated names are already in use or close to existing marks. Our work starts where a generator stops: strategy, screening and a reasoned shortlist.

Rounds of feedback and attorney searches take most of the time. A small product name moves faster than a company name used in several countries. We share a schedule once the brief is agreed.

It happens, and it usually means the brief needs adjusting. We review which names came closest and why, update the brief and run another round. The number of included rounds is set in the proposal.

No. Filing with the USPTO is work for your trademark attorney. We hand over our screening notes so their search starts with useful context.

Yes. We create a naming system, such as a shared prefix or theme, so new products are easy to name later. We also set rules for how product names sit next to your company name.
