Advertising for Therapists & Counselors
We run advertising for therapists, counselors and group practices that want steady inquiries from people who fit their specialty. Someone looking for therapy is often anxious, short on time and unsure where to start. Your ads, profiles and website should make reaching out feel safe and simple.

Key takeaways
- Ad groups are built by specialty and location, and each one lands on a page about that concern with fees and insurance.
- Ad pixels stay off intake forms, and remarketing stays broad or off because health-based targeting is not allowed.
- No review campaigns target people currently in therapy, since professional codes limit soliciting testimonials.
How People Look for a Therapist
Most people start with a need, not a name. They search for anxiety therapy, couples counseling, EMDR for trauma or a therapist for a teenager, often with their city or "near me" added. Others start on a directory such as Psychology Today, or with a list from their insurance plan or doctor.
They then filter fast. Does this therapist take my insurance, or what is the fee? Is there an opening this month? Is telehealth an option? Does this person understand someone like me? A profile or website that answers those questions in the first few lines gets the call.
Therapist marketing works better when it is specific. "Therapy for adults" competes with everyone. "Counseling for new parents in Denver" or "OCD treatment by telehealth in Ohio" reaches the people you help most.
Paid Ads That Respect Client Privacy
Search ads are the core of most therapy campaigns, because they reach people at the moment they look for help. We build ad groups by specialty and location and send each one to a page about that concern, with your fees, insurance and a simple contact form.
Privacy shapes the setup. Google does not allow personalized ads based on health conditions, including mental health, so remarketing stays broad or off. Meta removed detailed targeting tied to health topics in 2022. We keep ad pixels off intake forms. Client details stay in your own secure scheduling and intake systems, and we discuss a business associate agreement before any work that could touch them.
Licensing shapes it too. We target only the states where you or your clinicians are licensed, which matters for telehealth practices. If you offer substance use treatment, Google requires LegitScript certification before those services can be advertised in the US. For full search campaign management, see our therapist PPC page.
Digital Marketing for Therapists Beyond Ads
Ads bring quick inquiries, but most practices also need these.
Directory Profiles
Clear, warm profiles on Psychology Today and similar directories, with a current photo, specialties, fees and insurance.
Specialty Pages
A page for each issue you treat, written to rank in local search and to help a reader decide if you are a fit.
Website and Booking
A calm, fast site with an easy way to request a consultation and no confusing steps.
Google Business Profile
Correct hours, office or telehealth details and categories so you show up in maps.
Referral Relationships
Simple updates for physicians, school counselors and other clinicians who send clients your way.
Ethics Rules That Shape Therapist Digital Marketing
Your professional code applies to marketing. The APA Ethics Code bars psychologists from soliciting testimonials from current clients, and counseling and social work codes have similar limits. Because of that, we do not run review campaigns aimed at current clients. We build trust through clear content, credentials and referral relationships instead.
We list credentials and license types accurately, such as LPC, LMFT, LCSW or PsyD. We avoid outcome promises like "feel better in six sessions." We also do not reply to reviews in a way that confirms someone was a client, since that breaks confidentiality.
Content can educate, but it should not diagnose. Posts that explain what EMDR is, or what a first session looks like, help readers without crossing that line.
Pricing for Solo and Group Practices
Ongoing work for a solo practice starts at $1,000 a month. Group practices get a quote up front, based on clinicians and locations. Ad spend is paid to Google directly.
Cost depends on how many specialties and states you serve, whether your website needs work and how competitive your area is. A group practice needs budgets that follow clinician openings, so a full caseload does not keep pulling inquiries.
We report inquiries, consultations booked and first sessions, using counts from your staff rather than client details. As a therapist marketing agency, we will not promise a full caseload. For larger behavioral health programs, see our mental health marketing page. If you run a PT clinic, our page on marketing for physical therapists covers referrals and direct access. All our channels are on our digital marketing agency page.

Therapist Marketing Questions, Answered
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Ask us anything else on the free audit call.
Most professional codes discourage or bar soliciting testimonials from current clients, and reviews count. Many therapists choose not to ask at all. We focus on directory profiles, content and referrals instead, and we help you reply to any reviews without breaking confidentiality.
It can be a good start, especially for solo practices. A website and search ads give you more control and reach people who never open a directory. Most growing practices use both.
You should only advertise services in states where you can legally practice. Some psychologists can work across member states through PSYPACT, but rules differ by license type. We set ad locations to match your licenses.
It depends on your fees, your openings and local competition. Many solo therapists start small and adjust once they see how many inquiries become first sessions. We help you set a budget that fits your caseload.
Yes. Insurance-based practices often get more inquiries but lower fees per session, so we watch cost per first session closely. We also make sure your pages list the plans you actually accept.
